"Nearby Airports"

David K 2 years ago updated by Eric.Rush (Project Lead) 2 years ago 1

Good afternoon, Eric.  The "nearby airports" search used to return the distance (in statute miles, apparently) from the airport on the screen.  I can no longer find that information on the page.  Is it hidden somewhere?

Hi David,

The new directory does not include the distance in mileage like the old directory did. The new directory uses a map interface along with a list whereas the old directory only displayed a list. So in the list, we had an absolute starting point (the airport where you clicked the Nearby button) and this couldn't change. However, this gets a little more complicated when we have a map that allows panning.

As you pan the map around, the starting location point changes from the original airport to the center of the map's current position. The list that is displayed is then updated based on what airports are now displayed in the map. So this would alter what is meant by "nearby". We would either have to update the distances based on the current map position or, remove the distance value since it would then be confusing to the user. If we try to display a new distance, the question becomes: Distance from what? Once the map is panned, we sort of lose the concept of nearby airports from a starting airport.

I'll keep this on our list and see if there is some better way to achieve this but for now, the map would be the point of reference as to how far away a "nearby" airport is.
