Wasn't quite what I expected.

I had something a bit different in mind when I started reading about this in the AOPA magazine.  Perhaps you could add a feature that would let me put in the starting airport, and show me what airports had (restaurant on the field, camping on the field, pancake breakfast, etc. in the near future, Museum on the field, etc.) so I could plan a day trip.

As to the features you do have, they seem like they aren't as aviation oriented as I would expect.  I looked up "restaurant on field" and put Chicago in the search box.  One of the airports listed was IGQ, Lansing Airport.  I would have expected that when I clicked on the IGQ airport icon, I would be taken to a site that described the restaurant, location relative to landing aircraft, food type, price range, style, etc.  What I got was your general airport site.  I had to dig a bit to find the restaurants, the on field one wasn't the first listed, and there didn't seem to be an indication that the restaurant was located on, and accessible from the field.

Hello,

Thank you for providing this feedback.

The Airports and Destinations app is "airport-centric" and is currently designed to help users filter airports based on having specified amenities like Restaurant on Filed, Camping etc. So the best way to think of it is as an airport directory that allows filters to be assigned which only show matching airports that have the desired amenities.

That being said, it does allow you to specify a starting location to begin exploring. For now, you can set an airport or city as a starting location but we are getting ready to add "State" to that list as an option. So you will have the ability to search for all airports in an entire state that have the amenities you are looking for.

Important to know, is how the search actually works behind the scenes:

If you use an airport or city as a starting location, the search will initially be constrained to 50 miles from the center point of the starting location. So you will only see matching results within 50 miles. However, dragging (panning) the map a little will remove the 50 mile limit and show all results that are within the map display area on the screen. There is a maximum zoom level though, and a message will let you know if you are zoomed too far out to see results. As you continue to pan the map around, the results on the screen will update based on the new center point of the map. This allows "exploring" the map without having to repeat a search each time with a new starting location.

The State search will bypass the initial 50 mile filter and show all results on the map up to the maximum zoom level.

Keep in mind that the more filters (amenities) you include in your search, the narrower the results will be. It is quite easy to add so many filters that you get "0" results.

We will be enhancing the app as we move forward. What we have now is basically a 1.0 version but we have a lengthy roadmap of enhancements and new features that we are actively working on. Some of these new features include "aviation" related activities like fly-ins, events and other activities that have an aviation theme. For now, the results are provided from Google Places however, a future release will allow users to submit interesting places or things to do. So that information will also be displayed on the map along with the Google Places information. This will be more similar to what you have recommended here in that you will be able to search for events and activities rather than just filtering airports.

We also rely on member feedback like provided here so we welcome any other ideas that you have that will help improve the tool for all users to find new and interesting place s to fly!
