Distance incorrect?

Ian S 11 months ago updated 11 months ago 2

I use iFly GPS on my tablet as a backup in case my panel goes down. A recent thread on their form about errors in distance got me doing some checking and I was disturbed to find that the AOPA planner distance is at odds with others.

Take this route : KDKX KLOZ KILN KFDY KARB

The distances iFly, SkyVector and FltPlanGo report for each leg is:

KDKX 68nm KLOZ  141nm KILN  95nm KFDY  73nm KARB (total 377nm)

However, the AOPA planner shows:

KDKX 79nm KLOZ 162nm KILN 110nm KFDY 84nm KARB (total 434nm)

Yet, if I use the ruler tool, I see the distances are in line with the other platforms. Please explain the discrepancies as this could be crucial on long trips for fuel planning.

Hello,

Thank you for inquiring about this issue.

When I enter the same route into the flight planner, I get distances that match what you are seeing in iFly, SkyVector and FltPlanGo.

I think what you might be seeing are distances being displayed in statue miles (sm). You can set the type of units to use at the aircraft profile level. Double check the aircraft that you are using for the flight to make sure it is not configured for stature miles when you are expecting nautical miles (km). I have attached a screenshot that shows the Units tab of the aircraft profile.

Oh dear... <slinks off into the corner all embarrassed!> You're absolutely correct Eric. As the plane we own shows MPH on the AI  have it set to SM.... Thanks!
